Reflexology is a gentle therapy, a massage of the feet, which encourages the body to work naturally to restore its own healthy balance.
In reflexology, it is believed that there is a “vital energy” that circulates between the organs of the body, which penetrates every living cell. Whenever there is an imbalance or problem with a certain organ or part of the body, the energy stops flowing freely and the problem manifests itself on the feet. By using a gentle finger or thumb stimulation process to these areas, the reflexologist helps remove the blockages so that the energy can flow more freely again.
A Holistic Approach
Reflexology takes a holistic approach, treating the whole person to regain the balance between the physical, emotional and mental aspects of the individual. The exact pattern and degree of disharmony is unique to each individual. Reflexology will treat it as such and the reflexologist will devise a personalized treatment plan which is put together after a full assessment has been made.
Who Can Reflexology Help?
Some people choose reflexology for help with specific symptoms or conditions.
Others have treatment to help maintain health or strengthen the constitution. Reflexology can also be used alongside conventional medicine in the treatment of both acute and chronic disease.
Reflexology has proved to be effective in a wide range of conditions. These include:
** Pregnancy management and for the relief of pain in childbirth
** Infertility, menstrual problems and the menopause
** Sleep disorders
** Migraines
** Depression, anxiety and mental health
** Hormonal imbalances
** Arthritis and rheumatism
** Sports injuries
** Sciatica, back pain and indeterminate aches and pains
** Stress-related conditions
The History Of Reflexology
The earliest reflexology study was found in a 4000 year old Egyptian tomb. In 1913, Dr. William Fitzgerald noted that specific parts of the body could have an anaesthetic effect on another area. In the 1930s Eunice Ingham further developed this theory, known as zone therapy into what is now known as reflexology. She observed that congestion or tension in any part of the foot is mirrored in the corresponding part of the body.
The Universal College of Reflexology has students around the world, across the United States and Provinces of Canada. UCR has a wide range of home study programs which are fun and easy to get involved with. Choose from Foot Reflexology, Hand Reflexology or Ear Reflexology distant learning programs.
Reflexology is now used extensively in the United Kingdom (over 7,500 practitioners registered with the Association of Reflexologists) as a complementary therapy, which works on the feet to heal the whole person, not just the prevailing symptoms.
