Introduction

Throughout history, mankind has often turned to spirituality in times of trouble. There are many paths to spirituality and Reiki is just one of them. It is a perfect self-help system that adjusts to the user and requires no medium, regardless of whether you are a newcomer to the inner world, a left brain intellectual, a body oriented yoga student, a housewife or devotee. It puts us back in touch with the long forgotten but all pervading life energy, and teaches us how to love ourselves again.

It helps us bridge the man-made gap between our fellow human beings and nature, so we can all live in harmony again.

For some, Reiki is one of the many forms of bodywork now available. For others it is a meditation technique, and for others it is an alternative new-age healing art. It all depends on the practitioner's viewpoint.

All over the world, healers work with life energy, which can be compared to a family with many members. Every form of life energy has its own individual characteristics, and they are all made of the same fundamental materials.

This life energy has many names around the world, prana in India, élan vital in Europe, chi in China, orgone by William Reich and ki in Japan. Reiki is the energy that pervades everything sentient and insentient. It is always changing and always the same. In the eyes of Reiki everything is alive and therefore worthy of respect; from the rocks in your garden to the family pet.

According to Indian, Tibetan and Chinese philosophy, and now modern science as well, we are surrounded by an incredibly alive universe that is made up of energy. Scientists have recently demonstrated that what used to be thought of as "solid" matter is in fact rapidly moving energy particles. Solidity is an illusion caused by the limitation of our perception. Everything is energy and therefore, alive and receptive to energy.

Reiki also aids relaxation, which is so important in our busy lives. Technically speaking, Reiki is one of many methods that are part of the Chinese family of Qigong and are used to activate, harmonize and reconnect the self with the universal energy.

It has its roots in ancient Buddhism/Shintoism, but differs from the common streams in one central point: the energy is transferred or made available to the student by initiation, not by years of long practice. You could call it the lazy man's Qigong.

Anyone can become a Reiki practitioner in a matter of a day or two. No skill and no special preparations are necessary. Once initiated into Reiki a person remains connected throughout their lifetime, even if it isn't used. Of course daily practice deepens understanding of the universal life force. There is no philosophy or religion attached to it, it is pure energy! Reiki treatment is safe in any situation irrespective of disease or discomfort, but it is no substitute for professional medical care. Reiki can be easily combined with orthodox medicine, as well as alternative healing or relaxation methods.

The Reiki system is divided into three or in some cases four levels or degrees that are like building blocks. An individual does not have to complete the whole curriculum. In fact, many people around the world have learned only the first and second levels. However the sequence of the degrees has to be followed. Each degree is complete in itself.

Understanding Reiki in its totality is an endless process. Reading a book or two and gathering information will not suffice.

As long as you live you will experience continuous personal growth. The best thing to do is go with the flow and trust that life itself will shower it's blessings upon you. The rest is every individual's personal mystery.
